During his State of the Union address, President Obama called for strengthening Social Security. At the same time, Obama said he does not want to slash benefits or privatize the benefits.

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama wants a bipartisan solution to strengthen Social Security – but he’s ruling out privatizing the program or slashing benefits.

In his State of the Union address released in advance Tuesday, Obama called for safeguarding Social Security for future generations. He didn’t make clear how he wants to do that, given that the popular retirement fund for seniors is viewed as off-limits by many in both parties.

Aging baby boomers are straining the system, and without changes Social Security’s combined retirement and disability trust funds are expected to run out of money in 2037.
